No, I'm not buying one. However, my brother in law has had his since new. He and dad were talking to a guy I know sunday. He said he did a few things to get much better mileage and power. He's kind of a know it all, or at least thinks he is, so before my brother in law spends 1500 bucks, I thought I'd ask you guys if you know anything. I'd ask in the 6.4 area, but I'm afraid I'd get slammed and told just to search asking a programmer question.
He said he put a Dr. Programmer in, 4 inch exhaust (told my brother in law to go 5"), and a k&n filter. Power went up, and mileage went up close to 18 according to him.
Anybody heard of this, or do you think there is any truth to it? Seems like a load of crap to me, but maybe I'm wrong?? That would be upwards of a 4mpg increase, and I struggle with believing that.
Not that I know much about the 6.4's, but it seems I've read their air intakes are great from the factory. DPF delete and programmers are what I've read to do to them. You can take that with a grain of salt Darin.
lookin into fixing mine as well need info on which exhaust system to run. looking at H&S mini max for a tuner and cng conversion. I'm getting 12.5-14 mpg and running off road diesel when i can. $4.50+ a gallon here in cali right now. Crazzzzzy
DPF delete, head studs, and a chip tune.
skip the K&N filter, they let in way too much crap that will kill the engine.
4 or 5 inch exhaust with low restriction muffler.
ask in the 6.4 section, the guys will not tear you up if you do not start off with an attitude.
form the question in the lines of "i am helping my brother in law with his 6.4, and want your opinion on real world experience, not what some magazine says to do"
granted there will be some smartasses, but there are a lot more helpful people there than there are asses.
Egr, dpf delete before I'd even touch it. Exhaust and spartan, should do better than 18 at that point
There you go. When the DPF gets clogged up it increases significanty the amount of fuel provided to burn the crap up that's in there. Some tuners can make them smoke less and subsequently run fewer regen cycles. Or just do the deletes, exhaust, and tuner. SCT, Spartan, and H&S come to mind. Intake isn't such a huge concern but can be done. I think S&B makes a good 6.4 setup.
Thanks guys. I see no reason to post up in the 6.4 area, I got some good answers here. Anybody else with an opinion feel free to advise. I'm gonna tell him to check out this thread.
the 6.4l is the least economical diesel to ever be offered in the f-series.
don't go spending $ on mods to help improve it,or you'll just end up with less money, and nothing worth writing home about for FE gains.
if he wants to delete the DPF,that's good.fuel going in the base is no good.
but if he's truly interested in mid teen "real world" economy,he'll have to consider a different diesel engine to get it.
anyone who claims upper teen averages in the 6.4l is driving the things hwy at 55mph,out out the flats, like it's a car daily, perhaps down hill both ways,is going by the built in lie-o-meter,simply guesstimating mileage,or telling fibs.
it is very, very, very, unlikely that you will ever see first hand,a 6.4l truck pushing 18 mpg average fuel economy after investing 2k or less in the truck,by ditching the DPF,modding exhaust, and adding a chip.
plan on an honest 10-12 mpg lifetime true average with a srw 6.4l diesel truck,or go to a different platform.
throwing money at it in hopes of massive gains,is a fool parting with his $.
the 6.4l will go down in history as being known as the "6. 4 sheets to the wind"
they're thirsty.

only in stock form.
there is a local company here with over 100 of them in F-350 +F-450 utility bodys and they average 10-13 mpg after the modifications running down the road at 15-16,000 lbs and 75 mph.
I've heard numerous reports of the 6.4l getting 18-20 mpg with the DPF deleted. They also make ungodly horsepower with a DPF delete and tune.
I have too. But I've also talked to mechanics that installed and worked on them, along with several folks who knew how to hand calculate MPG's and from what I understand, the mods do a great job of fooling the lie-o-meter into reporting better fuel economy, but unless you're really going to baby it, 16 is about what you should shoot for after the mods.
Just reporting what I hear, but what you're saying is very believable. I take all mpg reports with a grain of salt. I really only trust my hand calculations since reports are so all over the place.
