Hey can anyone help me? I have a 1995 f-150 with a 302, the transmition shutters when it shifts to over drive. It also shifts hard into second gear. It is a 4R70W tranny....
Hmm sounds like classic E4OD torque converter shudder. But you had a 4R70 which I know little about. I think the E4OD was an electronic version of the 4R70. Don't know if the 4R709 has the same weaknesses of the early E4ODs. I am a bit surprised the 4R70 was used in your model year since I think the E4OD started taking over in 90 or there abouts. Like I said I know little about the 4R70.
If your fluid is brown or light pink instead of red, or if it smeels burnt, then you may have toasted the seals and or added particles to the fluid which would cause intermittent harsh shifting and the shudder.
Some people are able to "cure" the problem with a fluid change or flush. If the seals have been damaged, you will probably need at least a minor rebuild. I would assume that there are new specification or up rated components for the 4R70, there are for the E4OD.
I had the same problem.....for about 3 yrs. When I did finally get the tranny power flushed with a filter change....it stopped. I fuuly expected to replace at least the converter. Hope you have the same luck as I did.
