1986 F250 4x hub clutch-where to find one?

Not exactly sure what to call this-manual hubs, removed the plastic cover and this 'clutch' is next, after taking out a phillips screw...you can see the damage-what is it called, and how to find one? Been searching an hour.

Is the part you are looking for #4221 in this drawing? If not, which part is it?
Oops, sorry. My intranet is down and I can't get to the drawing at the moment. Will be back to you in 30 minutes or so with a drawing that shows the parts of the front hub.

Those look like bearings to me. This is a gear.

No, if you can zoom in enough on a better/larger copy it isn't a bearing. Try this: download the pdf and you can rotate and zoom on it.

Look at 4222, that's a race, has to be a bearing. This part I'm referring to is the next thing behind the hub, and, it has a long spring behind it that keeps it backed off. Click the lockout tab, and it engages the hub. It's a hub 'clutch', or, as the parts guy said, a 'fuse' that would break, a type of shear pin setup.

I agree that is a bearing now that I look really closely. But, all I need is the number - what is it?

Tell me the # of the part from the pdf. I can then find the description from the other half of the Ford parts manual. But, I don't know which of those parts it is so cannot move forward.

Dave - I thought the stuff at the bottom of the page was the guts, but maybe not. In any event, yours hits the nail on the head. Good job! I'm going to save that for future use.

Well mine's not a Spicer, but, it's approximately what you say is #11. It's the 'outer' hub lock assembly. I went to Cascade Four Wheel Drive here in Grand Rapids, MI today, and the best guy works there-he indicated that my hubs were F150, not F250, despite the truck being labelled an F250. He also said that in all likelihood, the back of the hub was shot, thus, causing this. He also said to check the bearing play, as that can also cause the damage. So, then he found a used Warn hub for $35...I'm gonna put it on soon. For a truck I hardly use, perfect.

I also found out from his info, that I have the Indep. front suspension, and, that my outer axle U-joints are definitely needing replacement as there is too much play. But, due to the Indep. front end, it's a hellish job...

Don't worry, you still have a f250 frontend. The standard frontend on the f250 regular cab pickups was the dana 44hd, which did use the same hubs as the f150 dana 44. Your front axle is a spicer/dana frontend also. The aftermarket makes some of the hub assemblies, but I am not sure where you can get the separate sprag piece that goes up against the large spring, or the large spring for that matter. The hub kits I saw didn't include these, but my first place to look would be Napa. They seem to carry a lot of spicer parts, and can get most anything if you get a old timer who can look in the catalog for you.

Putting the new/used hub on will be cake. My bigger concern is that I blow out the front u-joints while driving, they both have a bunch of play. Can I just remove each after taking off the brakes/hub, and service them?

I hardly drive the truck, wood getter/ plower.

Ok, so I go to put the new lock hub on. Take the small lock ring off the spindle. Put 2 allen screws into the hub lock and pull, wont come out-logic-has to be locked in with a snap ring. Finally, after looking and looking I see the very slim snap ring but neither driver/pass side has ears on it-how the H am I gonna pull that large lock ring out to get the lock base out? JEEEZ
