gear ratio?

My truck is a 2006 4x4 with a 6" pro comp kit and 33" tires. I want to pull a 16' enclosed trailer with atv's. What would be the best gear ratio to install for this? I was thinking 4:56's......any suggestions?

What ratio do you have now? What motor? What do you expect the weight of the trailer to be and how often are you going to pull it?

I have the 5.4 motor, with 3:55 gears. Trailer gvw with quads about 4500 lbs. And towing about 10 times a year.

4.10's would be more then enough. I tow that much and more on regular basis now with 33" and 3.73 gears.

I don't think I would bother changing for just 10 times a year, but I do agree with Drew. 4.10's should be plenty if you are set on changing them

With the lift, tires, and lack of tuner/tunes I would think 4.10s would be a good upgrade. Maybe if he had a good set of tunes he could get by, but I personally can't imagine driving my leveled truck with 33" tires without tunes not to mention his has a 6" lift. I don't know, I have zero experience with gears, but I think it would be a reasonable upgrade. If you wanted to save some money, like I said, you might could just get a good tune from 5star and be satisfied. That'll run you $500 or so, expensive, but I'm sure it beats the price of new gears plus labor.

Will the tuner be able to re calibrated my speedo when I change my gears?

Yes. The SCT X3 does allow for tire size changes.

Colby, you make an excellent point. I forget about my tuner from time to time. Untuned you would want to regear

I was just thinking about something but didn't they do away with the 3.55 gears before 2006?

If you are certain that is what you have then 4.10's would be a good upgrade but if you end up having 3.73's then a tuner would be more then enough to help you.

I don't think so, at least, if I understand what you are asking correctly. Simply google some pre-2006 year along with 3.55 like "2005 FX4 3.55" and you will find plenty of people with 3.55 gears. Regardless, would that make any difference since his is a 2006? Mine is a '06 Fx4 and I have 3.55s (as much as I'd like to have 3.73s).

I just thought by the 06 model year Ford was not using the 3.55 in the trucks except the XL's or a truck with the 4.6 or smaller engine. But clearly since you have an Fx4 with a 5.4 with them then I am wrong. Thanks.

Generally speaking changing just one gear size is hard to justify expense. If you can afford it, get the 4.10's AND custom SCT tunes!! This is not so drastic that you will regret it and you'll likely enjoy towing much better even if you will sacrifice a few extra RPMs during the day-to-day... If you get tuner first, Mike can reprogram the tunes if you change gears later!

4.30's or 4.56's would be better if you towed on a weekly basis. Not sure how you calculated your estimated weight but you need to add EVERYTHING you will be toting with your rig.

Trailer, quads (most listed weights are DRY), fuel (what's in quad PLUS what you carry in cans), oil, tools, riding gear, how many people are you hauling? Are you using a weight distribution hitch? Those add weight as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying your are NOT correct in your estimate but want to make sure you consider all that!

Let us know how it works and see you on the trials soon!!

Thanks RUNVS, my trailer gvw was an estimate. I don't actually know exactly what it will be yet. I don't have all of my equipment yet, but we are working on that. We will most definately see you soon.
