Does anybody have trouble with squeeking fan belts after it rains. My trucks belt squeeks after it rains. Not really a problem just an annoyance.
I can only go about 3 years or 30k before mine starts to sqeak. I usually take it off and let it dry well and put it on backwards, and it'll dispear for awhile.
Have had 3 serpentines on the !@#$% thing and they STILL squeel after it rains. Help!! Are there any aftermarket brands that are better than the crap Ford is selling?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-02 AT 09:32 PM (EST)]I would look into the belt tensioner on you truck. If you are not getting enough tension form your tensioner it can cause that problem.
Wet belts will make noise, especially if they have some miles on them and are maybe a little bit glazed. It is also possible that the tensioner may need adjusting like the guy said.
On a different listserver for chebbies, they have had very good luck with the Goodyear Gatorback belts. Sometimes hard to find though.
I have not had any success with belt dressings on serpentine belts, it is a very temporary fix and gums up everything bad. A real pain to clean up after that.
The serp belt drives the fan and waterpump off the back of the beltwhere there is no grip at all.I cleaned my waterpump pulley with brake cleaner before putting a new belt on and it has been good for over a year now thru rain sleet and snow. I am using a Gates belt. The only sqeal I get now is from the idler pulley bearing which I will replace ASAP, but this is an itermittent noise so I tend to neglect it. I did pop one of the seals off one day and found it to be damn near dry so I added a little light grease and the problem went away, but there is a bit of slop in the bearing race so it does need replacing soon.
My 1993 F-150 4.9 w/ac sqeaked for a long time. I bought a gates greenline and it has been on for about 5,000 and no sqeaks at all. I made a point to ask the parts guy if the lifetime warranty covered sqeaking he said it does on that belt so I plan on getting a new one as soon as it sqeaks at all. So I would reccomend the Gates Greenline.
I just replaced my belt on a 95 5.0, because it was squeaky, now it doesn't make any noise except for right when i start it up, it makes a loud screech, not like the squeaking though. Is this because the belt is tighter? Will it go away after being used for awhile? Thnax for the help.
Ford has a TSB for the pre-94's replacing the WP pulley. Have only seen it work 1 of the 5 times I sold it. A tensioner is a good thing look at, but most of the ones I have seen are the PS pulley is slightly out of alignment. My friend with a 88 F-250 5.8 4X4 tried 4 belts, a tensioner, and the WP pulley. Everytime he changed something it would away for 1-3 weeks and come back, until he moved the PS pulley back about 1/32-1/16". It has been over a year and no sweek! Everytime I sell a belt for one these I tell them to first check the PS pulley and it fixes 75% of them.
