i have a 98 ford e super duty v-10 gas engine on my shuttle bus, & the battery light stays on, so i took off my alternator, which is a 200 amp, had it tested at this distrubiting parts place that rebuilds them, & it tested out good. so he said, i think, to check the voltage regulator? coil? so if anyone knows where it might be located please let me know. i checked all my wires, there fine. & drove out night with everything on & it still charges fine, also my idle go's up & down, like it idles fine for a few minutes, then just drops down like it wants to cut off, then goes back up again...anybody think it has something to do with the battery light on? or maybe an idle valve?
as he said, it should be internal. they quit using external regulators back in the 80s.
that said, is your light intermittent or is it on constantly? i have a 130a alternator that has the light come on randomly but still charges just fine. from what i've read, the brushes wear out and are prone to causing this. they're fairly easy to replace if you pull off the back of the alternator case. i have yet to try it on mine.
Good to see you in...you sent in a service ticket....about not being in
