My tranny pan has 14 bolts
I DO HAVE an Electronic overdrive switch on my gear selector (PRND21)
Tranny dipstick says Mercon
And I cant find a tag or any readable i.d. on my tranny
My haynes is as good as firewood and the local Ford dealership is full of cavemen so any help is greatly appreciated. Thankyou
Not trying to be rude, but about 2 minutes of searching Google shows that a 14 bolt pan is a 4R70W. The transmission code on your door jamb sticker should say "U". E is E4OD.
im not disagreeing with you ive just read a few different things in different places. the gaskets and filters also look different. im jus tryna figure this crap out without having to drop the pan first yunno
some ****ing genius ripped the door sticker off... if i ever find the previous owner ima skin him. cuz this is really pissing me off: im not tryna put the wrong fluid in there to start with and i need the right filter and gasket... i figure good old Mercon atf?
It's a 4R70W - for sure. Ford never used the AOD-E in the F-Series, and an AOD would not have an OD cancel button. E4ODs have 20 pan bolts, so the only one left is the 4R70W.
The AOD is different than the AOD-E/4R70W. The 4R70W has revised gear ratios and a few other improvements over the AOD-E, but they are essentially the same.
Your truck came with Mercon, but you should switch to Mercon V. To do the switch you should also drain the torque converter. You'll need around 14-16 quarts of fluid with a converter drain.

Kinda but its 14 bolts which narrows it down to 1 of 2 i think we figured its a 4r70w now i jus need to figure out how to drain a torque converter lol and get a gasket/filter and this guy is tryna sell me on merc V but im not convinced if it came with standard merc atf factory stock.... explain this?
so get the sum bitch spun till i can get at it from under the truck by the bell housing then break it free? how do i go about re filling it?
I just did mine a couple weeks ago...i drained the converter as well...i was concerned about starting the truck with a dry converter also (the trans will fill it up once it has been run)...talked to my pops, he told me to put about 3-4qts in...start it, shift thorough all gears, recheck/fill as needed...and repeat untill level is good...seemed to work for me
There is a cap/plug on the bottom of the bell housing. Pop it off, and rotate the engine until the drain plug is on the bottom. Take it out, drain it, put the plug back in.
Converter will not care one bit if it is dry. Just put an initial fluid fill in the pan, start it up, then keep adding fluid until it's full - as mentioned. No need to shift it through the gears.
