There are numerous '05 Excursions 4x4 with < 80k miles for under
$27k. Try cars.com or autotrader.com. Search for '05 within
250 miles or so and you'll have a better feel with what's available.

A private seller would be cheaper than a dealer and other than
not having it cleaned up to sell is just as risky an option IMO.

I love my 6.0 and get better fuel mileage than my wife's '04 Explorer 4x4.

Welcome to FTE

Thanks to all who have replied. I appreciate the thoughts from all of you.

I am heading back over to the dealer tomorrow to test drive again. What questions should I ask to ensure I know what I am getting? I am taking a good friend to help me look over it too.

I paid about that for a 1 owner 05 Eddie Bauer 6.0 with 60k. I looked for about a year, take your diesel mechanic if your serious about a 6.0 diesel. Those mirrors are about $500 for the set & twice that for power fold/extend/retract With a properly running 6.0 you should get around 15 mpg, use fuelly.com to compare a lot of car/truck mpg

good luck, you can never really look over a vehicle enough. Even though carfax is mostly worthless, you could make sure there werent any accidents.

What's with a carfax? seems like a bunch of BS. Do all dealers have to report to a carfax every time they do something? How about small garages? It's obvious if they have been wrecked anyway.

They aren't great, and no people don't have to report which is the main issue.

BUT, if somebody did report an accident, it will be on there. $20 may or may not be worth knowing it was in an accident. Most of the time you can't tell how bad of accident, but you could at least track back where it was bought or if shops did work to see if they fixed the accident.

Bought mine at a dealership and They printed it FOR me. That was a nice touch. It does give you some idea of what was done to the vehicle. I seem to remember that when service was recorded it also gave you a geographic idea of where the car "lived" before.

Not the be-all end- all, but it can be a helpful piece of the puzzle.

Good luck,
Karl

Still Looking

I am still looking for my X. I am now wondering about the option of a 2WD vs. a 4x4. Can I get some feedback between the two? Currently I am not towing anything, however a camper is a possibility in the future.

Thanks for any input!

This opposite of this comment is what is, in fact, true. A carfax is not worthless, and a Carfax will not allow you to be sure that it hasnt had any accidents.

A carfax can be full of useful info. Dealers dont have to report anything they do to Carfax; many dealers will purchase from Carfax the ability to link vehicles to their dealership, so that any car that gets serviced there or comes through there in any capacity, the dealership name and info will come up on the Carfax.
This often includes the particular service or repair that was done and the date it was performed. Carfax also shows where it was originally titled, and where it has spent most of its life. When I see a car that has been in Cleveland, OH for 10 years, Im betting that it has a fair amount of rust. You can also get a good idea of how many owners it has had.

And the work that some paint and body shops do can make it very difficult to tell if it has had paint or body work, virtually impossible without a high quality paint meter.

A Carfax will show accidents in which a police report was filed. Carfax usually shows a little more info, but I have seen Carfaxes that didnt show accidents that an Autocheck did, and vice-versa.

Anybody who buys a vehicle without seeing at least one of the two first is just, well, stupid.

Both are great, if you don't need 4wd, get the 2wd to save some $ and front end maintenance. Mpg won't change much, but that's not why you're getting the Ex, right?

I just picked up a 2000 7.3 Excursion last month, I flew to Ca and drove 450 miles home with it. It has a few problems that come from being 12 years old, and not being maintained like I would, since the previous owner was not as **** about things as I am.

I will say that between the 7.3 and the 6.0 Diesel, the 7.3 is easier to own, the 6.0 WILL cost you more in maintenance costs. Everything costs more. The 6.0 requires you to change the oil religiously, which is not a problem for most people, as long as you have your eyes open going in. If you keep good quality clean oil in the truck you should not have injector issues.

As devils advocate, I have to say, I drove a 2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 on a family vacation in Montana, and LOVED IT. It got 18mpg on the highway with 7 people and 2 weeks worth of luggage in it. I would love to have one, but it still would cost you as much as the Excursion that you are looking at. I am just saying if your a Toyota fan, you might look into it. It might not be as big as an Excursion, but I was impressed with it's capabilities. That said, I would not trade my Excursion for anything other then another Excursion now.

Will the 2WD do okay if in the future we decide to tow a camper? When I get an X, I plan to keep it for the next 10+ years. What the the advantages/disadvantages of a 4x4 vs. 2WD?

Also, two 03's I am looking at say a 6.0, not a 7.3.

4x4 is used for off-road applications. Not really a factor for towing. Wouldnt worry about getting 4x4. The rig will be lighter in the front, improving mpg. Also less maintenance. Frankly, if the 4x4 hasnt been maintained it could cause you extra problems.

You are doing a good job thinking this through and talking it over with the group. Hope its helping you!

Take care,
Karl
