i have a 86 ranger 2.9 ext cab, std shift.changed the fuel pump reg.even though it would click when key was turned on..this system has two pumps and i have no power going to either one.i do get a low voltage pulse out of the yellow wire going to the pump in the tank though. i also reset the saftey switch even though it did not trip.please help....
The voltage you're seeing is probably from the fuel gauge.
You need to turn the key on & ground pin 6 of the self test connector (where you plug in your scanner to pull codes). This will keep the circuit hot while you test for voltage, starting at the "safety switch". Holding the connector with the 2 pins up, pin 6 is on the bottom right. Pins 1 & 2 are on the top pins 3, 4, 5 & 6 on the bottom.
THANK YOU 87XLT..i checked everything for power and all was good.Had power at the front pump&the rear pump.befor doing what you said i had no power so i ran a HOT wire to pumps from the bat. and only the front pump would work..So now would it be easer to pull the tank or the bed??I think the tank..LOL..
Guess i've been lucky, i have 240,000 miles on my 87 2.9 & so far have'nt had to replace the in tank pump. From what the other guys here on FTE that have done it say, it's easier to shove the bed back. When the time comes thats what i will do.
