Door Seal Mod

Door Seal Mod
I did the door seal mod today. I would not have believed it would have worked if I would not have done it myself. No more door squeak/rattle and no more window whistle it rides a lot quieter just like new. Instead of using ($18 for 20ft)3/8 surgical tubing. I used ($4 for 20ft) 1/4 vinyl tubing from Home Depot.
Here is a good step by step video. This is where I got the idea. Like I said it worked great.

The latex surgical tubing does not fair too well in the cold. I learned that first hand. The ice cleats I use for ice fishing uses latex surgical tubing for the straps. When they get cold the tubing gets stiff and can slip off the pieces that are slipped into the end and will not hold again until they are warmed up well above freezing. A silicone tubing would most likely stay more flexible in the cold however it is also quite a bit more expensive. Latex tube is only low temp rated down to about 0 degrees F although its flexability and elasticity will be compremised well before that.
Anyway I think I will pick up some black latex tube and give it a shot.

I know everyone wants to save money, but the silicone tubing is the best all weather choice, it is however almost as much as just getting the new OEM replacement gaskets, which with the new design I'm hoping it will last as long as the original ones.
Here are the original with the PO's attempt to do the mod 6 years ago, he must have used black RTV Silicone in the ends!
Here is the new OEM with the addition of a channel!
For the Excursion rear doors from my local dealer #yc3z-7825324-aa $57.20

You won't need to go all the way around. I did that for the first couple of doors and after hours of using soap water, I decided to just cut a slit in the seal about 1/3 away from each corner and just let the tube go around the corners. It is just as effective.
Doing just the corners doesn't allow it to get too stiff when it's cold out.

Click on link and choose the tubing you want. They have tubing in LOTS of different sizes and materials. I figure what the the guy in the video was using was part # 5234K74 black latex tube 3/8" OD 1/16" wall $.96 per foot when buying 25 feet.
Insulated Gray Silicone Rubber Tubing or Static-Dissipative Black Silicone Rubber Tubing in the link I posted should work fine as it is rated to -70 degrees F. But it is expensive, as with most silicone products.

Where would you find silicone tubing?
