Wheel Question...

I just realized that the factory steel wheels on my '69 F-100 are not hub centric. The center hole of the wheel is quite a bit larger than the hub. This means that the wheel is being held in place and centered only by the lugs. I'm assuming that this is normal for Ford trucks. Was it done to allow the same wheels to be used on 4x4 trucks?

Hub-centric is just a recent phenomenom which for Fords, IIRC came with the 97 F-150. The lug-centric wheels have been used since the start of the motor age. And I believe 4wd started in 1911 with the start of 4WD and Oshkosh's a little later. Even Ford Model T's got 4wd conversion kits, which are still being made by the inventor's son. The size of the hub was standardized long before the start of 4wd conversions and factory 4wd, which I think came about due to the size of wheel bearings which had to fit within the hub.

Thanks for your reply RichS2659. I am thinking of getting some aftermarket chrome or aluminum wheels and had noticed that most of them aren't hub centric. When I was taking measurements is when I noticed that the factory wheels aren't either. So there wouldn't be any problem using aftermarket wheels that aren't hub centric?
