Solved my Front End Noise Problems

I know there are numerous write-ups on the squeaks, rattles and clunks (S.R.C.'s) some of us have on our 4wd SD's but I figured it may benefit others by sharing my info...

I have been fighting the S.R.C.'s on my truck since I purchased it 2 yrs ago. Replaced the track bar, swaybar bushings and shocks with no luck. Searched the site and read 10 plus threads surrounding this issue. Had ball joints and wheel bearings checked - all good.

Saw where it was recommended to check and retorque the u-bolts. HOLY CRAP! Mine were probably 1/2 the recommended torque. Once tightened my truck is the quietest its ever been. No clucks on turns and terrible squeaking from the leaf springs. Unbelievable.

Thanks again for all the good advice on this site...great group of people.

IIRC it was max of 150 lt/lbs for the front and 185 for the rears. I went to 120 and will retorque to 150 this weekend. Was afraid I would break one...

FRONT U-BOLT TORQUE

According to the OEM Ford shop manual, the recommended front U-bolt torque is 99 foot pounds.

Hmmmmm. I guess a little more research is warranted. I have seen various specs online. Thanks Rongold

TORQUE

The rear U-bolts get torqued to 185 foot pounds, but the fronts are only 99. I checked in both the 2002 & 2003 shop manuals and they both say 99.

I will retorque tonight. thanks for the correction. Is it normal for these u-bolt to keep stretching? will they eventually just break?

Thanks for this thread. I have had a crunching sound from my front passengers side when making certain right hand turns since the day I got the truck. Figured it was ball joints even though there wasn't any play that I could find. Anyway, after reading this, I hopped under the truck and gave the u-bolts a tighten. The passengers side front nuts all had a full turn in them. Just did a 400km trip through the mountains and the crunching is gone. Thanks again for the tip.

U Bolts

Thanks for the info.

I have been thinking about dropping my rear shaft to lube the slider. Good time to retorque. Maybe put a little grease in the u joints while I am at it.

They might break if you go to 150 Foot Pounds, but after I installed my "X" code front springs, I had to retorque them about 4 or 5 times until they finally stabilized. They are evidently like modern day head bolts and have a certain amount of "stretch" built into them, and you have to keep tightening them until you reach their limit of stretching. After you reach that point, I would say they could snap if you keep going.

I have no noises at 99 Foot Pounds.

Can't be any thicker then the originals--The U-bolts have to fit the upper mounting plates, and go through the lower mounting plates, and the holes in those lower plates are a close fit to the U-bolts. If I remember correctly, the original nuts are metric (24mm), but the closest American socket size was 15/16". The bolts were probably longer, but not thicker.
