I recently purchased a 1997 Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder and manual transmission. Truck was cheap to buy however I have noticed when driving it the clutch engages fine and I can shift without griding any gears at all, however when releasing the clutch the it dose not go into gear until the very last moment, and on an incline at a stop going into first I can barely get it to go, any ideas I don't know if it needs a new clutch or what, I appreciate the help everyone if more info is needed let me know Thanks!
The most likely problem is a slave cylinder that is going bad. First check the fluid level in the reservoir that is mounted on the firewall, near the brake booster. If fluid is needed, use type 3 brake fluid. Also check at the bottom of the clutch housing to see if there are signs of fluid leakage. If the fluid level is low or signs of fluid leakage, that would be a good indication that the slave cylinder is on its way out.
If you need to replace the cylinder, you probably should also replace the clutch plate as well since you have everything apart.
Something is screwy with that clutch assembly - could be any number of issues including bad parts, incorrect parts installed, glazed friction surfaces, oil on clutch disk (which can happen if the rear main seal goes bad), slave cylinder, etc. Sounds to me like the only way to find out is to tear it apart and inspect it. It might help explain why the truck was "cheap to buy"...
