The other day I noticed that the battery light came on, and of course ingnored it. Yesterday it stalled out and wouldn't start up again. So I put another battery in it and it started up, drove it home and turned it off. I then tried to start it again, and it won't start, It won't even turn over...? Whats the problem here? Any ideas would be appreciated.
that happened to me yesterday. replace your ground cables and check your power cables. they may be bad, thats what happened to me. you might want to wiggle the grounds to see if the car will come on. good luck.
You might want to check your alternator,it seems like you are not recharging the consumption, the charging system is very simple and only few items to consider including Battery (you already changed) starting solenoid, alternator and related cables.
Good luck
Hello Stevedigi2000,
Welcome to FTE, hope we can help you find some answers to the questions you may ask.....I would probally have to agreed with Snook to start off, check your alternator, it's sounds as if you have a charing promblem, a quick and easy way to see if it's charging is to, get your truck running, loosen and remove the hot cable from the battery while your truck is running, if the alternator is ok your truck should still be running, then I would check all cables and connections for corrosion or wear....If the truck cuts off, well, it's time for a trip to the parts house...good luck, keep us posted on what you find out.........Once again welcome to FTE.............
Well....I pulled the hot wire while it was running....and sure enough, it cut off. So I'm replacing the alternator. Any suggestions on the installation before I start pulling it out? (I've never installed one before.) thanks.
Stevedigi, Congrats on the fix. I am glad this forum was able to help. I am with moneypit, if it has been a while since replacing your belts, now would be a good time to replace all them.
The battery light is really misnamed on all vehicles. The light is really an alternator light. It indicates that the voltage is too low i.e. alternator not charging. I do not know for sure on all vehicles, but some alternator lights will come on if the voltage is too high also (overcharging). You will notice that the light is always on when the ignition is on and the engine off, that is because the alternator is not charging.
