70s 460 Timing/Vacuum issue

Anyone,

Have a 460 with Headers, Edlebrock 750 CFM carb, Crane Cam, Regular Distributor. Engine has been worked over pretty good, bored out 30 over. Anyway. Engine is in my 55 Ford Truck.

Starts up Great, runs great...... My problem is this, whenever I "hotrod" it, the engine starts bogging down and sometimes dies from a dead stop. When Im driving along and hit the gas hard it starts knocking/pinging. Friend and I put the timing light on it and it is where it is suppose to be. Its 30 degrees advanced. I am not a fantastic mechanic....... My friend tells me that the vacuum is dropping out when I hit the gas causing my problems dyeing and knocking at top end.

What can I do to fix this problem? If anyone needs the specs on my eng for any reason, I got it if need be. Any help is appreciated!!!!!

Patrick

Check the simple things first like plugs wires cap and rotor. I know its not something every one keeps in there tool box but a vac pump (some one man bleeder kits use vac pumps) hooked to your advace in the distributor should tell you if it is working properly or leaking. Im no pro when it comes to distributors either but if you have a vac pump it will have a guage if not get one and tee it into your vacum hoses somewhere (closer to the dizzy the better)and run it in to your cab to monitor your vacum to be sure before you start replacing parts. At the least you will always have the guage in your tool box.

The vacuum with always drop when you hit that gas. That's why automatic trans use vac signal as part of the shifting to determine load on the engine (lower vac reading higher load, over simplified but mostly true)
