I HAVE A 97 7.3 POWER STROKE DIESEL TRUCK. THE LAST DAY OR 2 WHEN I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT I NOTICED IT HAD A VIBRATION WHEN DRIVING, SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM MOTOR OR TRANSMISSION, THE DASH STERRING WHEEL EVERYTHING WOULD VIBRATE, THE OTHER DAY I WAS DRIVING IT I HEARD LIKE A GRINDING NOISE AND THEN THE TRUCK CAME TO A STOP, THE MOTOR WAS STILL RUNNING BUT WHEN PUT INTO GEAR IT WOULD JUST GRIND SO I SHUT THE TRUCK OFF TO GET UNDER IT I CAN TURN THE "FLY WHEEL" BY HAND FREELY. AND WHEN I TRY TO START IT ALL IT DOES IS SPIN AND THE MOTOR DOES NOT ROATATE. ANY HELP, I WAS TOLD THAT THE CRANK SHAFT BROKE, COULD THAT BE THE ANSWER?
The flexplate is that big gear looking thing that the starter uses to start the truck. It attaches to the crank and the torque converter. A flywheel goes with a manual tranny, a flexplate goes with an auto.
yes its an automatic, when im under the truck and turn the fly wheel it turns the tourge converter as well if it is broke around the bolt pattern should the tourqe be moving?

Yes it will still spin, the torque converter is unlocked from the trans. The torque converter also keeps the flexplate in its original position as if it wasn't broke, it will not come out without taking the trans out.
cool, i had an half *** mechanic tell me it was the crank shaft that broke and the motor had to be rebuilt or a new one put in, i thought it was kind of fishy because i would of thought if the crankshaft was bent or it even broke while driving it would of caused some kind of damage to motor and made more noise than a little grinding like someone couldnt shift gears.

Ya I would stay far away from that "mechanic". I have never heard of a 7.3 crank breaking and it still run. Plus, to break a crank it would take $$$$$ in mods and a huge amount of power coming out of that motor. Pull your trans and I'm sure you will have a broken flexplate, pretty common problem.

Like Chris said, the flex plate is pretty common. On a side note, broken crank while driving will most likely result in....internal parts exiting the block and creating a massive oil leak. Don't ask how i know.
