Direct replacement for Rear chunk?

I am in my final weeks of being deployed in Europe and trying to formulate a plan of attack on my truck when I get home. The 9 inch rear end in my truck is pretty much shot. I have heard rumors of an 8.8 swap but know nothing about it or what vehicles I could pull it out of. Disc brakes would be a plus but not mandatory.

My question is what year/ model rear ends would be a direct replacement on a 1979 F100?

Not sure.
But why not get another 9 inch?

Brandon,
I was hoping to accomplish 3 things with an 8.8 swap, Newer parts, Disc Brakes and maybe a lower gear to get the RPM's down. I will probably just get another 9 inch.

the aftermarket is extremely strong for both the 9" and the 8.8".

i would think you can do anything you want with either rear. any brake setup and any gear combo should be on the table with both.

i would think the 9 would be the simplest, if you can find one.

the 8.8's out of the newer 1/2 ton's should be a pretty close fit, i would think. but i have not looked into it to say for sure.

if you are going to end up doing a bunch of work, might as well swap in a 9.75 or 10.25 out of a newer 1/2 or 3/4 ton .... either of those would be a major step up in strenght, plenty of them in the yards, and would likely have your disc brakes attached by default.

our you can get all crazy-like and put in a GM 14bolt full floater in there and make everyone and thier brother mad (even the semi-floater would be a great choice, to be honest about it)

Mike,
I was trying to keep it simple for now, seeing as I may move in the future, so any plans of a full restore have been put on hold till I get my career path figured out. I am pretty sure I can get another rear end from this yard I know about. Will be a direct bolt in out of another 78-79 like mine.

I will scout around when I get home.
