lifetime ford fan here, first time poster.
I have a 2002 f-350 7.3l 200+K miles...solid workhorse of a truck (we all know that)
Problem: the chime comes on immediately after starting the truck and randomly while going down the road (every 15-30 minutes ). It beeps for a sequence of 5 times for 5 times ( 5 sets of 5 ). Belt minder is disabled and key minder is gone. everybody buckled up. No warning lights of any kind. I wish I could find that chime and stick a nail or knife in the speaker.
I hope its nothing serious.
Does your air bag light come on when you first switch the key on before you start? As in during the bulb check? I think the chime goes off like that to tell you the air bag warning light is burned out, I seem to remember having one do that when I worked at a tech at a ford dealer.
i remember that SRS light coming on and flashing twice and then flashing seven times about 2 or so years ago. It was an irritating bright yellow light. but it stopped and I thought the code went away. I'll try that and if I leave the bulb out instead of it shining in my eyes, will I still get the chime? i assume the answer is yes. maybe i'll just put some black tape over it if it is. no one I ever talked to could tell me what code 27 was. Thanks
Code 27 means the off light on the passenger airbag deactivation switch is probably burned out. Ford says u gotta buy a new switch, the one in the dash you use your key to turn on or off. There is a write up on the web about getting a bulb from radio shack and fixing it for a dollar. I can't search on my phone easy, but you shouldn't have much trouble finding it. Then you'll need to remove the gauge cluster and replace the bulb there too if yours doesn't light up. Air bag warning lights are checked by the airbag computer, if they're bad it'll throw a code. If the bulb in the dash is bad too from being on all the time, lol, the computer has to resort to annoying you with the chime.
I have had the same exact problem with my 02. 5 sets of 5 beeps . I have been listening to this annoying chime for 6 years. What happen was dealer told me the airbag bulb was out( like everyone else said) and they told me this after taking the entire dash apart. Then they told me it was $600 to repair. I told them to put it back together and I would pick it up Never got fixed. But, like others said ,since the bulb was out, the chime took over. I'm surprised it is still chiming after all this time.Let me know what you do to resolve this annoying problem. I would love to get rid of it. Btw the truck never threw a code
While its apart, google the passenger airbag deactivation (PAD) switch bulb replacement, you'll have the switch accessible while removing the gauge cluster anyway, and that'll probably fix all your problems.
sorry but it is nice to know i am not alone in my hate for that hidden speaker sqwack box.i have a 2000 f350 sd 4 door 4x4 that has been doing this 5 of 5 chime ever since i cut some wires going to my ac comp after geting frustrated.then i got into the sterio and found the wireing was all jacked.plug in back of radio had differnt wire collers as to the harness.total hack job.i have no key in dash hole to turn off passenger air bag? anyway if anyone locates the dam nose box please post up.i have a speacail 12 gage round i am going to use on it.
The switch writeup is under the title: airbag light won't go off? Pas burned out? See here!!!
I couldn't get it to link from my phone, but you should be able to search that and find it.
To remove the dash fascia, remove the radio, you can buy the removal tools at most part stores of you have a factory radio, they look like two metal U s with a little ball on the ends. Might be able to make them from a coat hanger, but the bought ones aren't but $10. Remove the two screws behind the radio, then pull it free from its clips. Cluster should be easy from there.
So i removed the dash bezel today and found the bulb inside the airbag housing that has the key switch on it.Went to radio shack to get a replacement, but they didn't know which bulb would work, so I haven't done anything yet. looks like any easy job to solder the new bulb on the board. hopefully the switch is not faulty altogether
UPDATE.....NEWS FLASH....
Took dash apart today. PAD light was NOT burned out. It was the dash light. So, i
took the bulb from air filter light and swapped them. It started flashing 2 times then 5 times ( i assume thats code 25 ) that may be because i hadnt plugged the PAD back in. I ended up taking the clear part of the guage cluster off and putting a piece of gorilla tape under the face of guages. Good news.....NO CHIMES AND I CANT SEE THE AIRBAG LIGHT....its a good day sports fans
UPDATE! So I bought a bulb at radio shack and soldered it in the air bag switch. Still no light there and no gauge light, and I changed that bulb also. I'm still getting the chimes
