i was wondering if i could buy a 1 by 6 and make the grooves with az table saw or if i should go ahead and buy the bOARDS AND IF ANYONE NEW THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY THE BOARDS

A local lumber yard will probably be the cheapest source. Yes, you can do it with 1x6's or 1x8's. I've seen it done with even a sheet of 3/4 or 1" plywood.
