Block heaters

80 f150 I6 4 speed tranny.

Ok this truck I bought from Arizona of course has no block heater, but my old 76 F150 was a pain to start when it was cold period, so I was wondering if it was worth putting one on this Ford. I have heard that they are good and that they are a waste of money. Just looking for some input from you guys. And if you suggest getting on for this winter what kind, and then an affordable one. In about a month it will be cold here and I am trying to catch stuff before I end up stuck one morning because it wont start because of the cold.

My Dad owned a couple I-6's over the years. I remember back in 1977 at -25 below, our 66 F-100 with a 240cid started. He never had any trouble with that one or the 300cid in his 1980 F-250. Never used a heater of any type. Just kept it tuned up, good battery, and fresh oil. The 1980 truck fell apart around the motor and tranny. It was ugly, but you could depend on it starting and running every time!

I'm from western NJ/PA area and never needed a block heater in the 15 years I lived up there. And my 82 F250 has never seen the inside of a garage. Just make sure your antifreeze is fresh, your battery is in good shape, an the choke works properly. Now if you want instant heat and defroster as soon as you start up the truck a block heater will do that.

I would think a heater would be easier on the motor just because it would help keep the oil and coolant warmer. Cold starts are hard on motors.

If your choke is working properly, there's no need for a block heater. Living in WI, I have never used one and had no problems. Now, like stated before, it you want heat sooner, it may be worth it. Problem is, the new ones are crap and only have about 200-250 watts of heat.

How cold does it get down there?

My fathers 81 had a block heater. Definitely made it easier to start at 5 am in the dead of winter. Looking back it was probably something that could have been just as easily accomplished with new battery, starter and coil along with a properly adjusted choke.
