Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
if you must drive these speeds, you can't overcome the wind drag, but swapping the rear axle to one with 3.55's is the cheapest solution.you'd have to swap the front pumkin to match too though if you've got a 4wd.
build a low custom front air dam will really boost economy too at those speeds by forcing most of the air to the sides rather than under the aero unfriendly under body.combine an air dam with 3.55 swap and you'll really boost out there on the hwy.
for a truck used for occasionally towing only,it's a no brainer to run 3.55's instead of 4.10's though yes.
for that matter if i had a mostly hwy dd driver, id want 3.08's (no longer sold for this axle though.) wouldn't be much fun for any serious towing though and you'd wish you had your truck back anyway, even if the 3.08 ratio was still offered.3.55's are still a very good all around performance gear.it's not like that's a eco car ratio or anything.it's still well within "real truck" performance levels, just not a match for towing performance of the 4.10's or lower, but like i say, since that's not your norm, you won't care if she starts out and pull hills as strong for those occasion tows when it could mean (depedning on how you drive) saving hundreds per yr in fuel.
all depends on how much you drive too.if i didn't drive much, a 460/c6 truck would be just fine.since i drive a alot, that old school setup would cost me thousands per yr more than the diesel/e40d setup.
it's all in how you use 'em and how often.one mans ideal truck could be anothers miserable and costly experience.
