Hey guys
I was just wondering what the 0-60 time should be for a 77 f150 w/400. Its is all stock except for a used edelbrock non-egr intake and a used but low milage 1406 carb. and an open element air cleaner. the reason i ask is that i it seems i should be able to beat these stupid little cars with 4 and 6 cylinder engines but i cant always. Am I just asking to much from a stock engine? I dont know what mine time is cause I have not yet timed it. I will soon. I know racing can be dangerous and I rarely do it and then normally to just a couple over the speed limit. I am not looking to get a ticket.
Thanks
David
Yes i have traction. The gears i will check at lunch time. I guess that would make a difference. also its a rebuilt C6 tranny if that means anything.
thanks
David
Those gears are going to get you decent gas mileage but suck off the line. It's all about compromise. If you want better take-off you could swap out the gears but your mileage and top end will suffer. Plus you risk not having enough grip on the road and could just smoke the tires when you get after it. That said, used center sections for a 9" from the scrap yard are "relatively" cheap. You could try a set of 3.00:1 gears (common) or 3.25:1 (not as common but out there) to see how you like them. 3.50:1 (common) might start getting you into reduced mileage territory but will get you going better.
Just a thought.
If you can even find the 3.50 gears, I have tried you can find the gears but the center section and complete axle are damn near impossible to find. I have a friend that is a CNC specialist and he made me a set of 2.75 gears for a Dana 60, he also made me a few that were really up there like 8.80 and 7.54 I have a set for most ford rear ends and Dana 60's 70's and 44's, too bad they aren't for sale.
I think that if you have a higher rear end ratio, numerically lower, you will have a quicker off the line start. Mine seems to beat most other trucks. the lower your ratio the better it will be if you need to pull something real slow like a stump or if you are rockcrawling or so.
There is no other improvement that will change the way a vehicle accelerates more than a gear change. The gear ratio directly multipies torque. The best compromise without OD is about usually 3.7 with 26" tires. Numerically equal to 3.98 with 28" tires, 4.27 with 30" tires, 4.55 with 32", etc.
City mileage won't differ much but I would expect highway mileage to drop 15-20%. Vehicle weight, speed and aerodynamics can also have a drastic affect on mileage.
