Ok I have a 95 F150 2wd with a 302.. Nice truck for its year. What I'm wanting to know is, I have 31x10.50-15 tires on it right now. It calls for 235/75R15. What I want to know is how much of a difference will is make towing?
Right now I feel like the truck struggles when pulling my 12 foot trailer.. I only carry my Riding mowers around so really its not all that heavy.. But I feel like its struggling to stay at 60 mph. Its always going from OD to Drive.
I have a 97 explorer that pulls the trailer WAY better..
235's are about 29 inches tall, I haven't noticed any difference when I switched from 235/75R15's to 31's on either of my trucks but I didn't tow much either.
The 302 is notorious for lacking low-end power for towing and hauling. The gear ratio you have in the truck because that will make a difference too. (I bet your exploder Has lower gears)
If your transmission is shifting in and out of OD you need to lock it out of OD or it will kill the trans. I'm not even sure you if they say you can haul in OD or not. So I would just not tow in OD at all.

Yes the Explorer does have lower gears. But even when i'm running empty on the hwy at 65-70 and I start climbing a VERY small hill I shift out of od. I thought the tires being 2 inches taller would be the difference.
Thanks I appreciate your response
Headers and a good exhaust system will help too. Don't bother with chips, intakes, or throttle body spacers. Full synthetic oil in all the boxes will free up just pinch more power and mileage too.
Beyond that, lower gears will make the biggest difference for the lowest cost. 3.73's are what I'd shoot for since you're not pulling anything big. If you have an auto you could swap to a 5 speed and that will free up some power.
