Temperature gauge ?
Newbie to the forum. 1991 Ranger STX, 4.0. Had a leak from the rubber seal on the thermostat. Changed the thermostat (stat 195) and seal. Now my temperature gauge is not showing a constant reading, goes to half way and when the thermo opens the gauge falls down to a quarter. The gauge is cycling this way every time the thermo opens. Any help/suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Don B.

Try to make sure your coolant is topped off to about an inch below the radiator cap. Check coolant level when the engine cool so hot coolant won't blow out all over you and everything else. That's the best time to add coolant too. Keeping it full will help push out any air that may be trapped in the thermostat area, and help reduce the cycling.

Sound like your gauge is working correctly.
Shows hot when closed and then the cooler water from the radiator enters when the thermostat opens and it reads cooler.
Replace thermostat with correct temp from Ford.
Are you sure it's dropping when the thermostat is opening? How do you know? Check coolant for combustion gases.
