I'm looking at buying a 03 Ranger 4.0L SOHC with a 5-spd manual. This truck has "stage 2 4x4" on it. I do want a manual 5-spd but I neither need nor want 4x4 and every damned truck I look at has it. Don't need the drain on fuel economy. I'm an "ole farm boy" that can get around without it and I don't go off-road much anymore anyway.
My question: is there anyone who would want to swap a tranny & suspension with me? My (would-be) 4x4 & plates for your RWD? I realize I'm offering free gold here so there would be much I'd ask in return for the whole shabang.
The parts I can think of off the top of my head that we'd have to trade would be:
transmission w/ Tcase
rear drive shaft
front differential
front half-shafts
spindles
Just disconnect the front drive shaft. You have a little more weight, but thats not going to kill your fuel mileage much. These trucks are never going to get 25 mpg.
If you don't want a 4x4, then don't buy one. All that work swapping out parts sure wouldn't be worth it. The 4x4 engine is also different, and I would guess that the computer might be affected, too.
realistically you might be looking at a 1 to less than one MPG change. Thats $10-5 a month savings if you are doing 1200 miles a month of highway driving. Even with a straight swap between two trucks (meaning all parts are free), you still may end up spending $200 on supplies, tools, lifts, etc. It would take you 2-3 years to get your money back and break even with that savings.
Like I suggested, you will get a bit of an advantage with removing of the front shaft and that takes about 5 min to do.
Also something to think about, the donor persons vehicle would need to have a matching rear end gear or buy and replace theirs to match yours adding to the expense. It will also reduce the resale value of your truck.
Not to dampen you plans, but its just not a functional way to go about it.
BUT there are some really knowledgeable guys around here and when you run into trouble we can help keeping that ranger running at its best for years to come THAT is where the savings will come into play!!!!!
And welcome aboard, post some pics and lets see what we need to do to get it in tip top shape for ya!
