Rear end Advise

I have a 77 f150 4x4 with the 460. The rear end was leaking and the pinoin was loose, I pulled the entire assembley out and the 3rd member is cracked by the pinoin support bearing. also the ring gear has a chipped tooth. My axle is a 31 spline with 4.56 gears.

I bought another axle, I tore it apart its a 28 spline, 2.75 gears and has larger bearing. Is there anyway i can make the housing work? If not, where can I get a decently priced 3rd member housing without paying out the ***? I've tried several local junk yards, no help. I know I need a bearing kit and a new ring and pinoin! just need a housing or if I can make this other housing work somehow.

fwiw your 460 isn't stock, in case you didn't know.

Doesn't sound like your rear is either. But at any rate, if the 3rd member is all thats cracked, why are you swapping the whole housing out? Just get a new third member and swap your gears over to the carrier thats in it and re install it. That way you'll keep your 31 spline side gears and 31 spline shafts and your existing housing.

I don't know which bearing is larger in the housing. The actual housing itself only has the wheel bearing, and those came in "big bearing" and "small bearing" style, but I believe only the big bearing style were used on the truck, though they did come in two styles, a tapered bearing for most F150 and up and all 31 splines, and then a sealed bearing that looks like a catridge, comes prepacked with grease and isn't serviceable, and has a seal that seals around the axle shaft inside the housing. If you pull that seal and press the bearing off you can install the tapered bearings like the 31splines have to start with.

I am not sure this answered your question but its the best I can do with what you gave me to go on.

His ring gear is chipped so he not only needs a new carrier, but also a new gear set. If i were you i would search craigslist. There were so many 31 spline ford 9s made that you should be able to find a third member easy enough.

Yes, I said that. He will need a new ring and pinion as well, obviously. but that doesn't really change things... the 31 spline side gears should swap over to the new carrier iirc. They do with aftermarket carriers so I can't think of any reason they wouldn't for stock ones.

He has a new 3rd member/carrier from the 28 spline. So already has a good member/carrier to put new 4.56 gears on and drop into his existing housing, as long as he puts the 31 spline side gears out of the cracked carrier in.

Thats why I'm confused, sounds like with some new gears he is good to go, and I think I answers the bearing issue above, shouldn't be a problem...
