I got a 79 f150 4x4 shortbed, 460 c6 trans. This may be a stupid question but, why do I have two dipsticks? The 'normal' dipstick for oil is on the driver's side coming from the oil pan. The second dipstick is on the front of the motor on the passenger's side. It is short like it has been broken off or something so it doesn't read anything.
Thanks
the original dipstick was in the timing cover. Someone probably put on an after market oil pan with the dipstick in it. I have heard some people say they do this because the stock one has a habit of popping out when they are driven hard. That and the only aftermarket dipstick I could find was like $70.
The motor came out of a car thus the front dipstick. When into a 4x4 and received a different oil pan.... and .... those have a dipstick. so now you have 2. Sounds like the front one was cut to avoid bottoming out in the new pan and is used as a plug.

Don't agree. I have a '78 F150 2wd with a 460 and the dipstick is in the timing cover. I know the engine is original.
Cars and 2wd trucks use a front sump pan, hence the dipstick in the timing cover. 4wd trucks use a rear sump pan, so the dipstick needs to read from the rear, and going thru the side of the pan was the easiest way to get there.
FWIW, the 83+ trucks also use a rear sump pan, 2wd or 4wd.
