Looking for some input on the PCV system on a 351M engine.
I currently have the factory Ford valve covers with a PCV valve on the passenger side (rear of engine) and a tube routed to the front of my Carter AFB carberator. I purchased a set of Ford Racing 4" valve covers and they show a different set up than I currently have. The paperwork included with the Ford Racing covers show an additional tube running from the rear underside of the air cleaner to the drivers side valve cover in addition to the one running to the PCV valve on the passenger side (rear of engine). Can anyone recommend the correct (or better) set up for the PCV system? The engine runs perfect right now...just want to install the new valve covers correctly!
When the PCV draws out of the valve cover there needs to be a supply of clean air going in the other valve cover. It doesn't really matter which valve cover is connected to vacuum and which one is connected to vent. That's the reason for the fitting on the air cleaner. You didn't say if you are running the stock air cleaner or an aftermarket one. The stock air cleaner has a separate filter mounted outside of the air filter for the PCV to draw clean air from. Aftermarket open element filter housings will have a place on the bottom plate to punch out and install an elbow that can be adapted to a line to the valve cover.
Hope this helps.
Greg
Another option is to install a custom breather (such as a K&N), in the air intake side of the PCV system. This way you don't have to run a hose to the air cleaner. I have my Bronco set up this way, and it works very well.
I had two breathers in my truck and it caused the valve cover gaskets to leak I went to PCV valve and the problem went away. It probally would be OK later after break in but for now its a PCV valve
Use a PCV valve always and change it annually. Put a breather vent on the other cover or vent it into the air cleaner, it doesn't matter. Factory OEM system vents into the air cleaner housing thru it's own little filter.
