AC vacuum problem

I have a 2001 F350 and when I turn on the ac it blows from the defrost vents and not thru the front vents, It also stops blowiong cold at a staedy rpm however when I give it more rpms it starts blowing cold again. I also have seen the problem interact with my 4WD operation. Is this a vacuum problem utilizing the door between the vent locations or is it actually an AC problem? I have heard form buds that have F250/350's that they have had the same problem and that it's a vacuum problem. How is this corrected.
