Question EGR Valve???

Anybody know where the egr valve is on a 94 explorer (4.0L)? I see what looks like an EGR valve, but the dealer told me that it is the DPFE?? It's pinging pretty badly, and the EGR was the next thing to go. Is there even an EGR valve on the 94's? I saw one post that said there wasn't, but they were sure quick to sell me one at autozone. Any help is appreciated.

EGR Valve???

Starting at the exhaust manifold (could be left or right side), check for the presence of a pipe about 1 inch in diameter and follow it up. where it terminates on the rear of intake is the EGR valve. If no pipe, you do not have EGR. My 91 DOES NOT have EGR and I do not know what year they started putting them on the 4.0 engine. The DPFE is the sensor used to detect the amount of EGR flow. Generally if bad, you will have check engine light and stored codes pointing to EGR/DPFE.
Suggest you check other posts on pinging issues. Most common causes are dirty MAF and leaking lower intake gaskets.

EGR Valve???

Thanks for the info. I was able to find the egr valve. I was looking in the right place, I think that I just got bad info from the dealer. I have already cleaned the MAF sensor, and I don't see any signs of gasket leaks, and there hasn't been any oil consumption. I'm got some top engine cleaner that is supposed to be really good for getting rid of carbon, and just ordered a new EGR valve. We'll see what happens. Thanks again for the info.

EGR Valve???

the DPFE sensor is a common part that goes bad on most ford products

and will cause a number of problems , "could" cause the CEL to come on , and "may" cause pinging

that stupid sensor is 80 bucks

EGR Valve???

Is there a way to test the DPFE sensor to see if it's going bad? I haven't had any error codes pulled, and the CEL hasn't come on. I found another thread that mentioned a TSB from ford about cleaning the intake/de-carboning the top end with carburetor and tune up spray. I did that today and it helped. The pinging is about 90% gone, but it's still there a little climbing hills. I have already replaced the EGR valve, and My thought is that the DPFE might be the next thing to go, but I dont' want to just throw money at the truck until I stumble across the bad part. I visually checked all of the vacum hoses today while doing the TSB, and for the most part they looked ok. There was a boot on the cannister that looks a little rotted on the surface, and I'll stop at pep boys tomorrow for a replacement, but other than that the vacum lines look ok. So back to the question - Is there a way to test the DPFE sensor?
