this morning when i got to school my bronco was idling at like 2000 rpms and it would not kick down. its an '87 and has a straight 6. i shut it off and started it back up and still the same thing. so i popped the hood to see if the throttle linkage was stuck or something but it wasnt, i pulled the intake pipes off the TB and the butterflies were totally shut (with the truck off) so i know they arent stuck open. is there a sensor or something that will make it idle that high? it never idles that high even when first starting it on a cold morning. could it be the coolant temp sensor going bad and making it idle high? anything i can unplug or check to try to figure out whats goin on?
The idle air bypass valve (IAC) could be stuck open from oil/dirt acccumulation. I have a 90 Bronco, and it's easy to remove and clean the IAC. Remove the solenoid actuator and clean separately to avoid getting any throttle body cleaner on the solenoid.
A big vacuum leak somewhere would have a similar effect. Check all vacuum lines, and PCV carefully.
thanks, i had the intake pipes off earlier in the mornin because i put a new steering gear box on and i had to reach down in there to get to the hoses ... it had been running fine before that when i went to get the parts, so i must have knocked some wires on the TB or something ..
also when i got to school and was messin with it tryin to figure it out i was messin with the throttle cable and the third little cable thats hooked on near the throttle cable ... it looks like it goes down under the truck .. im assuming its the kickdown for the tranny. anyway i was pushing on that and it would make the idle go down, but mabye it was jus pushin on some wires down near the distributor or something.
