I have a 99 F550, all of a sudden when I start it, and the motor is cold, it smokes real bad. The truck has 49,6xx miles on it and has been serviced and maintained properly. I have the SC programer and have it in "towing mode". That is all that is has been changed. Also it has been re-programed since last August. This just started this weekend.
Once it warms up, it runs fine and restarts without any smoke as long as the motor is warm.
I was having that problem after I bought my truck with 110,000 miles on it. I thought for sure some of my glow plugs were bad, but fortunately the fix was much easier. I ran Standyne lubricity formula and it really cleaned out the engine. No more white smoke. Before you take the time to test the glow plugs, change the fuel filter and fill up the fuel bowl with Standyne lubricity formula. Keep adding the specified amount when you fill up. If this doesn't solve your problem, check the glow plugs next.
When i start my truck in the winter - i mean when it is really cold out , my truck puffs alittle white smoke for awhile , nothing major , just a little. Has done it sience the day I have had it.
I use Power Service Diesel additive on a regular basis and this helps some in the smoking dept.
According to the Suplement for the 7.3 "If air is allowed to enter the fuel system (during fuel filter change or if you run out of fuel) the engine will purge the trapped air as it runs. The engine may run rough and produce white smoke while air is in the system. This is normal and should correct itself in a short time." You might look at the fuel filter housing or some other connection that could be sucking air in and giving you this indication.
