I have a 2000 model F-250 built 8-99. I've checked the VIN through the www.fleet.ford.com web site which says it is either a 6.8 EFI-SOHC (W) or 6.8 SEFI-SOHC (W). So how do I find out which one?
Never knew that there was a diff in V10 FI systems, usually SEFI means Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection and can be seen on the V10 as ten individual fuel injectors, five on top of each bank of cylinders.
EFI might indicate Throttle Body fuel Injection and is usually TBI not EFI. Any way you can easily see on the engine either of the two methods with TBI usually there are one or two electrical connections at a device that looks a lot like a carburator but does not have any float bowls.
If I am all wet and giving you bogus info, someone will correct it soon, but I am sure all the V10s have ten plugs and ten fuel injectors and EFI vs SEFI are just saying the same thing.
I forgot to mention they list the horsepower @ 265-310 or 265-275. Before I do any engine mods it want to know what I'm starting with. I've seen on different threads where the big change happened between 99' and 2000'. And since the truck was built in 99' their is a chance I got the 99'.
I was under the impression if you had a 2000 year model you had the higher 310 HP engine, no matter what the build date was. My truck was built 8/99 also, I have always assumed I had the 310 HP version. Also I have been told you can tell by where the flange is located that connects the "Y" pipe to the cat. If the flange is forward of the transmission cross member you have the later version, the 310 HP model. If the flange is located aft of the transmission crossmember you have the early version 275 HP engine. My flange is forward of the crossmember thats why I assumed I had the 310 HP model.
I remember reading a post about this quite a while back on the deisel-stop site. It said that there was a certain letter to look for in the VIN number to determine which HP you had. I don't remember the details, but a search may pull it up. It was back when they were FordDiesel.com. I checked my truck because it was built in October of 1999 for 2000 and it is the high HP. After that I didn't bother to remember what to look for. Hope this helps.
Thanks for all the information!
I checked the flange and found it to be infront of the transmission crossmember which would indicate the 310 horsepower. I checked this against a picture of a 1999 y-pipe I found at http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/borla2.htm. You can tell the piece of pipe after the y is much longer on the 1999. 310 horse
Can't get the link to work directly but if you type in it will work.

Besides the differences in the '99.5 and 2000 and up, there is another minor difference in the EGR valve that was included on some of these engines. It apparently wasn't a model year difference, as some of the 2000's had it.
I thought the ModelYear99 vs MY2000 V10 power difference was due to the heads? They supposedly redesigned them for MY2000, to remove a detonation issue the Triton had? It was fixed in MY99 for the 5.4 (in the F150). Any-one recall the details?
Jim, remove the . at the end of the link to get it to work.
