Installing engine to transmission???

How do you know if you installed the engine to auto tranny correctly? how do you know if you accidentally dissengaged the pump on the torque converter? I got the transmission to mate with the engine all but about 3/16ths of an inch and I couldnt get that because of mounts etc.. so I drew the remainder together by tightening all the nuts an bolts ate and it is now snug as a bug. I am just worried that something went wrong. How will I know if everything is all right after first startup? Just VERY curious and worried and hopeful all at the same time.

Thanks in advance,
Obie

You shouldn't have to force it. I'd recommend backing it off & finding the problem immediately. It's much cheaper to spend an extra 2 hours now than work an extra 50 hours to earn enough money to pay for ANOTHER transmission/engine because you were a little anxious. Make sure the TC is fully installed on the trans input shaft, AND that its studs line up with the flexplate before attempting to bolt the bellhousing up.

One trick is to use flexible steel banding, called Plummers tape at hardware stores, to retain the converter on the pump as you mount it. Cut off a length of tape about 5" wider then the face of the bellhousing, mount the converter and place the tape across the face of the bellhousing (but not across the big crank stud), bending it around the back so it holds the converter in. Then mount the tranny to the engine.

When the crank stud (the big **** on the front of the converter that fits into the back of the crank) starts into the crank, and there are enough threads through the flexplate holes so you can start the nuts, and get the bellhousing maybe 1/8" away from a flush fit to the back of the engine, remove the tape and tighten it up the rest of the way. This should be easy to tighten, not difficult.

Also, make sure you're using the right spacer plate between the engine and bellhousing. If you're not using it, it's gonna come up too tight.
