I'm thinking about getting an exhaust for my '03 Ranger 4.0L. I've been looking at the Flowmaster 50 series, just because I don't want the deep burly sound on a small truck like the Ranger. But which is better though, just getting the muffler taken out, and the new out in, or getting a catback? Not to sure about what things are called, but learning.. Thanks.
Buy the muffler and have a local exhaust shop that you trust do the pipes. A catback system will cost you about $250.00 plus labor. The muffler and custom exhaust is more in the $200.00 range, labor included. This way you can have more say in how it is routed and what size pipe to use. For a 6 cylinder I wouldn't go above a 2.5" pipe due to loss of back pressure. For a V8 (I know, you have the 4.0) I would probably go with 3" pipe.
And, the Flowmasters are great. You want the Delta 50, not the regular 50 if you don't want it as loud. In order of noise, it goies like this:
Flowmaster 40 series is loudest, then Delta 40, then 50 series, then Delta 50. It all depends on how loud you want it but just remember that the 40 series (non Delta) is very loud.

go with the 40 series if your gonna be runnig this muffler with the cat. The cat quiets things down alot. if ya go with the 40 it will sound like a 50 delta flow without a cat. you will like it , trust me.
Thanks guys, I went with a Magnaflow. Cost was $235. Then after found out from a gal at work, she could have gotten it for me cheaper around $140. Thats what she paid for hers. Oh well off topic.
