Someone here probably knows. Are the disc brake dust shields for the front disc brakes galavanized steel?
Mine were pretty rusty. I was cleaning them up in prep for painting, but the rust converter says not to use on galvanized metal. In some areas, it appears that it may be galvanized, but I can't tell for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

The ones on the '82 Explorer I had weren't. I media blasted them and then powder coated them and am pretty sure I would have seen the galvanizing when I was blasting them if they had been.
Hmm. Maybe I should have them blasted and powdercoated. I didn't think of that, earlier. Of course, it will take close to 4 weeks to get them back, if I do that and I don't know if I want to wait for them. I guess I could just pull the front brakes off and install them when they get back. I'm so looking forward to getting this thing rolling again.
Wouldn't be that hard to pull the brakes to put them back on. Especially after you've had the brakes off recently so the bolts will let loose. (You do use anti-seize I hope.)
The stuff I use on spark plugs, lug nuts on alloy wheels, all external bolts like brake and suspension, etc. And, the stuff that gets all over everything and won't come off.
Gary, what if Ron shipped his brake shields to you? Would you be interested and could you beat his 4-week time reference? Just thinking...
Probably. The reason I'm slightly hesitant is I'll be gone over next weekend. We leave on the 10th and be back on 13th, so that takes a minor bite out of the time.
Having said that, I've only done one other job for someone else and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse so I did it. In other words, I don't have pricing nor any clue as to how to price. So, Ron, shoot me a PM if you are interested and we'll see what happens.
So for those wondering what was the plan, I decided to just wirebrush and clean them up, and painted them. That way if they ever get chipped, I can easily touch them up, and if ever needed, they can be blasted clean and repainted or powdercoated at a later date.
"IF" they were ever galvanized and they are now rusted, any galvanizing, which is a surface treatment, is long gone and will not interfere with the coating you plan to use.
