Dual Mass Flywheel Question

What is the free play limit on the movement of the 2 halves?
Some say 3/4", some say little to none.

My 1995 F350 has a minimal rattle when I shut the motor off.
I never hear it any other time. No vibrations.
I've measured the free play at about 5/8"

We're taking the family to Colorado next week in this truck and really don't want to worry about this. I'm not towing anything heavy (2 atv's).
I'm not one to let things go but time is limited and would like to replace this when I get back from vacation.

Should I worry?

I'm one of those who agree with very little to no movement. If its not making noise while its in motion then its not yet on its way out. The clatter on shut down is somewhat normal unless its getting progressively worse. If and when you do replace it consider a single mass flywheel...

On another note If you replace it with a Dual Mass I have a almost brand new LUK clutch for a dual mass with less than 30 miles on it, just as good as new...put a ZF6 and single mass in and replaced the dual... asking 150 for it... And I live in CO

If your not loosing parts when you drop the inspection cover, your all right.

It shoudln't move at all, but when the clutches in the flywheel get worn, it allows play which then starts to wear on the plastic bushings on the springs which is what creates the movement.

If its not rattling in the pedal when you push it in and you didn't have parts come out when you took the cover off, I'd say you would be alright.
I drove mine while it was bad for a while, but my center hub had not disentigrated yet. Just had vibration at 70mph from it being out of ballance.

Thanks for the tip.
No noise when the truck is in motion. I'm feeling better about if for the present time.
I think that I'm going the single mass route when I change it out but will keep you in mind on the DMF.

When I pulled the inspection cover there were no parts or sparklies falling out or laying in the bellhousing.
Also no chatter or rattle when I push the peddle.
I think I'll be ok for a while.

BTW, thanks for the DMF link. Great job there!

You should be ok on your trip, but when you do replace it, I would definitely do a solid flywheel. The dual mass are ticking time bombs, and when one comes apart, it will trash the transmission. I get rid of them as soon as I get one of these trucks, but that's just for my piece of mind LOL!! Good luck on your trip and be safe!
