5.4 Engine head gasket?

I bought the van several months ago in Maryland and drove it to Boston and then back to North Carolina with no problems. The other day I drove it about 120 miles. On the way home about 5 miles from my house the top radiator came loose from the radiator and pumped all the coolant out. I stopped immediately and walked home and drove back with 4 gallons of distilled water to fill it up. It ran fine but I think it has had a slight miss going up hill for quite a while. I can't believe the top hose could come loose like it did unless there is a head gasket leak that is creating the extra pressure. The hose appeared to have the OEM clips that you squeeze with a pair of pliers to take loose. Has anyone had this happen without there being a problem?
