I got 76 360 its leaking oil up at the top of engine in the rear. Ihave put intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets on it, sitting idleing it dosent leak at all but after driving for a while its got oil leaking down bellhousing, cant quite figure out where its coming from any ideas would be great
beaver77, I can feel your pain. Just because you did those things doesn't mean you corrected the issues. So you will know our trucks have a huge opening that air rushes in and blows oil down the back of the engine and onto the driveway.
This is a huge known issue, replacing the heavy intake you can knock things out of place that you thought were secure. The valve covers need to be blocked to return the bolt hole area back to absolutely flat before install. The valve covers need to be tightened to about 15 inch pounds, barely snug.
There are other techniques that I'm sure others will share.
Mine has some very minor oil leaks as well, they all tend to end up on the bottom of the bellhousing or the tranny so unless its really bad I'm not worried about it. I have never seen an FE with any age on it that didnt weep some oil anyways. Yours does sound like valve cover leaks though, as said, overtightening is usually the culprit. Many here also advise to make sure the oil return passages under the covers arent blocked as they will pool oil in under the cover then leak.
