So tonight i challenged my friend to a Truck pull, he drives a 05 Silverado 1500 4.8 and My vehicle is a 89 F250 5.8 C6 auto. I did beat him by a bit My back tires are at like 15% tread left basically flat and he had really good tires almost new... My question is if i had better tires would i win by margin? Whats the biggest factor to win in a truck pull?
Tug of wars don't really prove anything. All they do is break stuff, especially when you do it on pavement.
A few years ago, a couple guys I knew hooked up their trucks. One guy had a 02 F-350 Crew Cab Long Box DRW 7.3, and the other had a 2000 Supercab Short Box SRW V-10. You would think the Crew Cab Dually Diesel would win hands down, but they did several pulls on dirt in 4wd and it was 50/50 as to which truck pulled the other.
If you really want to win a tug of war, just hold your brakes until the other guy starts spinning the tires. Then hit the gas and you will drag him all over.
It comes down to 3 things: weight, power, and traction. If one truck has more over the other, its a no contest. You two prolly had similar power, youve got weight, and hes got traction (in dirt anyways). If you two pulled multipul times, itd prolly be 50/50 on wins. If you wanna win, put some weights in the bed and get some tires lol

Ya thats what i thought that truck pulls really dont prove anything, I mean i have a 3/4 ton truck and he had a 1/2 ton, of course my tires are almost zero tread.
So what your saying is Traction doesnt matter on dry pavements then? only when pavements wet
No, what he's saying is that slick tires will have better traction on dry pavement. That's why they put slicks on race cars. However, slicks are the worst possible thing to have on wet pavement, snow/ice, dirt, or mud.
By sled you mean? hooking up to equivalent trailers with same weight?
No he means a pulling sled. Look up truck pulls on youtube. Its got a big sliding weight that shifts the weight and stops trucks and tractors. Its a fun sport and you don't have to break your friends truck.

imho it is the most power to ground sport there is.

I completely agree. It puts every aspect into play, from the weight of the truck to the grip of the tire to the torque of the motor. The truck with the most tirque can lose on bald tires and the truck with the least torque can win on grip alone. I think its a blast to watch and participate in.
