so i just grabbed a 460 from a friend of my brothers to replace the one in my boat with i was wondering if there were any interchangeability issues between the years of 460 i know some have dipsticks in the pan and some in the timing cover are all the parts able to cross over or not if not which ones can and which ones cant can i change the timing cover to convert this new motor from a pan dip stick to a timing cover dipstick

 

There are no large problems with the blocks. Between the early and late 460's (not sure on the year split), the block switched between internally and externally balanced. The EFI heads, intake, and exhaust are not compatible with the carbed setup, but the block will mate to the top end of either setup.

 

All 460s are identical, except what was mentioned above. The internal/external balanced crank and you cant use a carbed intake on fuelie heads and vise-versa. You can, however, swap your fuelie heads AND intake for carbed heads and intake and vise-versa.

 

one other thing is that the external balanced engines use the D9TE blocks, while the internal balanced engines use the earlier blocks (like the DOVE, D1VE, C9 blocks etc). you can use the external balanced crank, flywheel and front weight in the early blocks but you cannot put the internal balanced cranks in the D9TE blocks. the counterweights won't clear the cylinders without a lot of grinding.

the other thing that probably might not interchange is the pushrods depending on what block and heads you use as there was 2 different deck heights used. so you will have to mock up your setup and check for correct lenght of pushrods. that is assuming of course you are swapping heads between blocks.
