From what I can find it is a 4R70W, but I thought this transmission was in later model trucks......

IIRC from another recent thread the 4r70w was introduced in this generation truck, sometime in the '92-96 F150s and then carried over to the '97+. It's an electronically controlled variant of the AOD.

Does any body have any opinions on this tranny, good or bad, known problems? I ask because sometimes it acts like it dosent want to drop into first or passing unless you floor it all the way.like if you are slowing to a stop for a light then the light turns before you stop all the way, i try to get back on it and it just dosent seem to respond.???

The 4R70W isn't a POS but it's not as strong as an E4OD. If it's not kicking down then it's probably something simple. When was the last time the filter was changed? I don't know much about this particular tranny but I think not kicking down would have more to do with what controls the tranny rather than a shot transmission itself.

Yes.. just like the E4OD this gearbox is completely computer controlled so the first step in diagnosing a problem should always be to pull the codes.

Also keep in mind that Ford's transmission programming around this era was really dreadful. So if there are no fault codes, and the TPS checks out good - that's just how it's going to be.
