I just purchased a 97 F150 EC, 4.2V6. Whenever the A/C clutch is engaged, it starts making a squeaking noise. My neighbor suggested spraying lube into the outer edge of the clutch and the noise did stop for a few days. Therefore, I think it IS the clutch. The local Ford Service center verified that I should be able to just replace the clutch, but didn't want to give me much information. I purchased a Haynes manual to get more info, but it only has instructions on complete removal of the compressor. Does anyone know how to replace (lube) only the clutch or is there some online information I could review. Please help ... Thanks!
Are you sure the problem isn't just your belt? When the A/C compressor cuts in it creates quite a bit of extra load on the belt. I'm wondering if when you lubed the clutch some of the lube got on the belt and it stopped squeeking?
If not, I can post instructions on replacing the clutch. It's really quite easy.
Maybe someone in the A/C forum which is a ways further down on the main forum page might have some other answers too.
I will replace the belt and see if that will help ... but it is more of a metal on metal sound than a squealing belt. Please post instructions to replace A/C Clutch... Thank you!
