I just did this. take all wires coming from the controller which is what the relay is bolted to and remove them from the relay.and the end of the zigzag piece. there are 2 small wires. the one on the back side is power when the key is on. Leave it. remove other small wire (white).
run a wire to your switch from that post. Thats ground for the relay . hook it up to your switch. hook another wire to your switch and run it to ground. I used the cig lighter ground. ground is ground.
when you push the switch with the key on it will give ground to your relay and it will click and energize.
You can do the hot wire but I like to use ground because there is less chance if shorting than a hot wire hot wire and burning your truck down
Which is the relay and which is the controller? Any pictures possibly?
well one point to consider is that one of the small posts on the controller is supposed to be grounded, so the fact that both posts are hot tells me that your ground to the control side of things is the problem here. correcting that ground would make the whole system work as intended.

The controller provides the ground, so you should show 12v on 3 terminals with the key on. I suggest reading the sticky and figuroit why they aren't working, but if you want a pushbutton, do as suggested, go from the terminal with the white wire to a switch and from the switch to ground.
A quick check... Key on ground the terminal with the white wire. Solenoid should click and you should get power to the second big terminal

( is this meant to be one sentence? )there are 2 small wires. the one on the back side is power when the key is on. Leave it. remove other small wire (white). (They are at then end of the zig zag piece from what ive read?)

When you turn the key on, it sends power to one of the small terminals. The power goes through the coil inside the relay. that is why you get a voltage reading on both terminals with the key on. When the controller grounds the relay, current flows and turns the relay on, connecting the 2 big terminals. If you ground the relay with a switch you eliminate the controller. It is possible your controller is ok and providing a ground and putting a switch on it wont work. Thats why I said to ground the white wire and see if the relay clicks. What color are the wires that hook to the small terminals on the relay?
The yellow is probably the ground side. To be suredisconnect it then check for power with the key on. You should have power on the terminal and not the yellow slwire. If so, then ground the terminal and see if the relay clicks and gives power to the other big terminal. Obviously, don't ground it for more than 10 sec or so or you will burn out the glow plugs.
my 1986 w/ 6.9 came with 6volt quick start system ,so the controller goes bad , and being poor not able to buy the controller,,,i took a glow plug down my parts guys and eyeballed a comparable 12v plug bought a set ,,,by-passed controller with wire nuts, and ran hot solinoid trigger wire to a old horn button mounted just above the parking brake release..........worked for over 15 years,,,,,,,thank you very much
