Distributor Advice.

I'm in the process of collecting the parts involved in swapping out my 2v carb to a 4v carb.
I just bought a Edelbrock 3771 intake, and still hunting me down a decent priced Autolite 4100.
I also bought a 1" spacer (phenolic) that i will probably tap for the PCV valve.

I will not be using the EGR valve, so i am looking on options for the distributor.

Not sure if i should just buy a aftermarket dizzy like the HEI style or the ACCEL dizzys.
I would like to keep the stock unit, it been trouble free since I've owned it.
I've been looking into re curving the dizzy, but i cannot find a re curve kit for it.

Any body have any solid info on how to re curve my stock dizzy?
And where to buy the parts involved in it.

Forgot to mention, the motor is a 400 out of a 79 Lincoln Cont. sitting in a 79 f150 4x4. I believe the motor is all stock cam etc.

One option would be to get a reman stock distributor for years without EGR... you are looking for Duraspark set up for no EGR. I don't know which years so hopefully somebody will post it.

Dura-sparks are pretty easy to tune. First make sure the mechanical advance stop is in the short slot. 2nd find another Dura-Spark, take the light spring out of it and put it in where the heavy spring was in your dist so you have 2 light springs in it, odds are 2 light springs will be ok. Set your base timing then unplug the vacuum advance and go for a ride, Listen for any spark knock if you hear any you may have to go back to the heavy spring but I'd doubt it. Then hit a steep grade hard and see if it pings at wot. If it does ping on a grade at wot then you will need to remove some mechanical advance. You can either fashond up some sort of stop or I always just weld it up some so it has less advance. Go for another ride repeat as necessary untill it doesn't ping anymore. Then you can plug in the vacuum advance and see how it acts, same thing there if it pings make up some sort of a stop. I just make up a stop that will touch the inside of the housing out of a thin piece of metal and drill 2 holes in it for 2 small machine screws to pass through. Then drill and tap 2 holes for small machine screws in the advance arm. Screw the stop on and adjust it as necessary till the ping goes away.

I think you will find everything here you need: FORDMUSCLE webmagazine: Timing is Everything - Distributor Curving for Maximum Power Not sure if Crane is making the kit anymore, but Mr. Gasket sells the springs. 925D I believe is rhe number.

Ok just got done reading that article, that helps me understand timing and fords distributors at the same time.

Question is, what slot would my dizzy have being it is a 79 model dizzy?
The spring kit from Mr gasket will help bring the timing in faster, but what do i do for the factory slot i have?
Do i need to buy a reman for what ever yr didn't have egr or should i just build the slot up like mentioned in a earlier post?

And what would be a good overall timing for a stock 400??, right now my initial is at 12 or 13 i think, but i don't know the total, never checked that.

Questions Questions Questions..... Please somebody have answers lol.

fmc400 may be able to assist a little more with this. That said, you will have two slots, use the smaller of the two. The EGR(your year) I believe is vacuum controlled with a temp controlled sensor connected to the ported vacuum line, so running without EGR "should not" be an issue. If a DSII had different size slots with EGR vs non EGR, I can't answer. There were two vacuum canisters. One with a single port for using ported vac advance, and one with two ports, with the second hooked to manifold vacuum to retard timing. This port can be left unhooked. Thats all the help I can offer. Someone should correct any mistakes in this thinking.

Yes, there's no reason to remove the distributor from the motor.

If you do, you'll just need to clamp it in a vise anyway.
