These days, too many people can't fathom being wrong about anything.
No one can know everything about anything, much less everything.
It's refreshing to see the old-school attitude of "I was wrong, and I ain't afraid to admit it".
Yup! He gets rep points for that.
There is absolutely no shame in admitting when you made a mistake, are wrong about something, or plain just don't know something. Zero Nada. Null. Zilch.
Like Paul says, there is no way somebody can know everything about anything, especially an intricate, complex subject. It just cannot be done.
Honesty, integrity, admitting mistakes are far more valuable traits in a person than just about any others.

Yup, I gave a plus rep too. Kinda surprised me when the system didn't tell me to "spread the love".......
In a lot of ways, I wish they'd fix that rather than or in addition to removing the neg rep option.
I rarely ever use the neg rep option, as I've always felt it was cheapshot type thing. I try to use the plus rep option, but the system stops me from doing it so often, that I typically just give up trying......

One needs to rep 20 other people before bestowing a rep upon any single person again, the intention here is to make it harder for people to cheat and illegitimately get more green chicklets for themselves.
Of course, people do it anyhow (cheat) via mass rep-giving threads so one still needs to use some common sense & judgement in determining if any given person knows what they're talking about or not, and not rely exclusively on the number of greenies somebody has.
I am proud to say I earned all of my stripes legitimately (but it took me 5 years here to get 'em all).

Welcome, Kemo Sabe!
Personally, I never really give a hoot about the rep feature. 1 local forum I'm on has a "karma" feature, with "applaud/smite" options. I added "Smite me" to my profile, and have the most smites amongst active users.....
Everyone there knows me, and knows my outlook on life. You may not like me, but you'll know where I stand.......
Any other users that get anywhere near 1/2 as many smites as I have gotten, typically quit going there, or delete their account (a rare option for a user to do themselves).

I am glad this was explained as I have wondered what the parameters are.
Soon enough, the rep thing will just be another "everyone gets a trophy" type thing, as the only option will be adding positive rep, or nothing.......
I rarely use it now, but when I do, it's to let someone know I approve of their attitude or to say thanks for posting *useful* info. If I disapprove, I'll say it in public, not thru a cheapshot like neg rep.
Personally, I'd rather the whole dern thing just go away. The value of someone's info is far more important than many green thingies they have opposite their username.......

True, it is.
The number of green chicklets can be a good indicator about how the rest of the forum feels about a person and their contributions to the community over time. It can be a quick visual indicator, especially to newbies who haven't yet made any determinations as to who knows what they're talking about and who is blowing smoke.
