I just changed the fluid on my 2000 EB at 368xx miles. Ford sure did make this an easy procedure. The torque convertor had a drain plug on it which made the job easy. Also, the pan had a drain plug. I didn't have to balance a pan full of transmission fluid. I must give ford the credit the deserve on this one.
Hi,
I want to do a tranny fluid change on my 1998 Expedition.
Do you know if the is there a torque convertor drain plug on this model ?
How would I access it ??
Thanks
Lou

There should be a drain plug. You need to turn the engine over by hand until the plug appears. There is a little black plastic/rubber plug that covers the hole for the TC.
You can put a socket on the crank bolt and turn with a breaker bar or you can remove the fuel pump fuse and have a helper crank the motor over until the plug happens to stop at the 6 o'clock position.
Putting the socket on the crank bolt is easiest. That way you don't have to mess with priming the fuel system. It is pretty easy. It helps to have 2 people. One to turn over the engine, and one to look for the TC drain plug.
Hello Everyone !!
I/m finally getting around to changing my Tranny Fluid soon.
Can anyone fill me in on whether I need a new pan Gasket for the tranny pan ?? When I looked at the pan it was stamped with "reusuable gasket " . Is this the case ?
Also does this Tranny take a new filter ?? or do you just clean the same one ?? If so, what is the proccedure ??
Thanks in advance !!
Lou
I was able to re-use the gasket from my pan. It looked like it was in good shape. The new filter also came with a gasket. The filter is, and should be replaced. That way it is keeping your tranny fluid clean instead of filtering it through dirt and crud.
I'm a novice mechanic a best so please don't let this question insult anybody's intelligence. How do you re-fill the TC with transmission fluid after it has been drained? Does the TC fill at the same time the pan is filling through the engine compartment transmission fluid fill port / check?
Check this out. https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...hangingatf.php I followed the steps here, and it worked just fine. It has you start the truck for 30 seconds, then turn it off. Just follow this guide, and it will work just fine.
The procedure posted states to not use Dextron V in the 4r100! Last month the dealership change the tranny fluid in my 2000 exp to Dextron V. The dealership claims they change all 4r100 to Dextron V when flushing the tranny. The owners manual also says to use Dextron. So what gives? Should I have the Dextron V fluid changed again to Dextron?
