I have a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4 V8. Seems in the hotter days, the truck won't cool down, but on days like today @ 76 degrees outside, it's fine. Does the a/c need more freon & if so, how do I go about doing it myself.
You will be recharging R134a refrigerant. Go to your favorite auto parts store and shop around. I was surprised at the number of brands stocked near the check out earlier this year. Many will come with the connector, gauge and hose you will need to do the job. All will have detailed instructions. READ and FOLLOW.
I paid $18 for the one can I needed. Do not buy a product with dye, oil or stop leak additives. You don't need them.
SAFETY FIRST. Wear eye protection, long sleeves and heavy leather gloves when you do the recharge.
i was in the same boat, thinking my freon was low. turns out there was a small amount over what was needed. had it drained a bit at an a.c. shop and it helped somewhat. the rreal problem is the parts in the a.c. system needing to be cleaned and/or replaced. i cant remember all the exact parts but it would be about $400 including the discharge and recharge of freon. you really should get your system checked before you add freon to it.

Absolutely correct to check refrigerant level before adding. Presupposing that no recharge has already been done and a '98 compressor is cycling with intermittent or weak cooling, it sounds like at least one can of over the counter R-134a would be the cheap remedy. Without evaluation it is likely the same recharge will be necessary next year because there is a leak. This is one of those areas where personal opinion, mechanical experience, financial circumstances and the overall condition of the vehicle dictate action.
All disclaimers and warnings by the product manufacturer should be considered and recharge directions have to be followed.
