So my E-brake pedal has been broken since I got my 84 Bronco, & I'm just now starting to look at why it is not functioning. It appears that the "metal" the pedal bracket bolts to has broke. It is broke right under the dash, so when I press the pedal down, the entire bracket goes down too and the brake cable does not tighten up, and the pedal does not click down.
Has anyone else had this problem, or am I explaining myself well?
I believe I understand you. The parking brake assembly is held to the truck by 2 10mm. nuts from the firewall side, and one 10mm bolt right above where the handle connects. Maybe a picture would help. If where the bolt mounts is broken, you're in a lot worse shape than if the tension/release assembly for the foot lever is broken. Those are easy to replace, I picked one up at a JY for $6.
Best avenue might be find a local guy to weld it up if it's the piece I'm thinking of.
When you step on the brake, does is tighten up at all, or does the whole thing move with the pedal? If the brake ratchets down any, you might get by for awhile. Look under the driver's side and see of there's any sag in the cable. At ~ the front of the bed there's a split into the rear wheels where you can tighten it up.
Junkyard is the best way to fix this. You probably need new cables in the back also. They are famous for rusting and getting stuck. They are cheap enough at the parts store.
Here's a picture of what I'm dealin with. I pulled one side of the broken metal up so you can see it.
Looks like the weld nut just pulled through, or maybe the dash frame split. If the nut pulled through, make sure the frame it attaches to is still straight and put a fender washer and nut up there to hold it....or have the nut welded back where it belongs. Just make sure you don't melt the plastic around it.
So is it a major PITA to strip down the dash to that point? I would love to do that and have it welded and reinforced.
On another note... I found that the two bolts holding the brake pedal assembly to the firewall are in good shape, the lower one has been pushed out towards the engine compartment slightly. Probably from me tryin to set the brake. I think I'm going to remove the entire thing, clean it up, and get a new cable while I am tearing into the dash.
My truck has broken there.
I just bent, screwed, epoxied a reinforcement in place.
I didn't want to remove the harness and fuse panel in order to weld without melting all the wires.
I've also had to weld that little mounting 'ear' back onto the parking brake mechanism.
That went well and didn't cost stupid money like a new replacement one does.
I would also do the bolting stuff instead of welding if you're interested in saving the plastic, removing it to protect from heat would take several hours. Might be able to temporarily bend it a bit out of the way but I don't know how much good that will do.
Well, looks like I'll be removing the E-Brake and the bracket, gonna get a new front brake cable, Reinforce the firewall on each side, and see about bracing the broken dash metal support.
