Hi everyone, Just a quick question, the rear uni in the Bronc is showing signs of wear after a few thousand ks. I can also notice a slight noise at high speed, that changes when the rear bounces on the highway.
The diff-tailshaft angle is just about perfect, not much angle at all.
The double cardan joint is perfect (had it stripped and checked), there is no balance problems with the tailshaft.
It is in the diff shop at the moment getting the Detroit replaced with an Air locker, and the guys there think it may be one of 2 things:
1: The Yoke (I think it is pretty old) may have a slight warp on the end, so when the uni-joint caps are pulled in, it is pulling one tighter than the other in other words not evenly (hope u understand what I mean)
2: the Uni-joint is not Spicer, but another brand, he reckons that the spicer unis are better than the other brands (other brands are cheaper), and could also be the problem.
I would have to say that the "uni" (universal or u- joint) is going out. They tend to wear out faster on lifted rigs with larger, heavier tires. The Detroit Locker may add to the strain on the uni, too. I have had some cheaper ones last only a month or two on previous Broncos & Blazers with a lift. The driveshaft needs to be a straight line into the diff yoke as can be, and I've corrected this with shims that fit under the spring packs to rotate the axle housing to where it lines up. I agree that Spicer makes the better joints, but these are still designed to wear and break before something else in the driveline does. I also think you would need to do some serious driving or have a uni/u-joint disintegrate or dynamite in order to bend the ends on the yoke. Later, Randy
